Difference between Identity and Personality

There Is a Distinction Between Identity and Personality. Identity is your internal self but personality is external more outward.

It is quite easy to confuse identity with personality, as they both represent who we are and are deeply intertwined. However, they are two different aspects of our being, and the distinction between personality and identity plays a critical role in self-discovery, personal growth, emotional healing and in leading an authentic life.

Personality represents the outward expression of who you are: it describes the way in which you behave, communicate and respond to the world. This includes your tendencies, patterns of emotional and behavioral tendencies, your attitudes and preferences, as well as your social demeanor. A person’s personality can be influenced and shaped by several factors, such as family history, environment, culture and society. For instance, it is possible to be a caring personality, an introverted personality or a self-assured personality.

However, identity is much deeper and more profound. It is the intrinsic perception of who you are beyond roles, labels, and expectations. It is related to your inner core, beliefs, values, the unique purpose you serve on earth, your passions, soul expression and authentic self. Who am I, ultimately? What do I really believe in? Are questions which identity answers.

Identity is the core of you, that makes you who you are. Whereas personality is a part of Identity.

As a person’s experiences are varied, your personality can evolve significantly over time. With new learning, personal development, trauma, relationship and the journey towards healing. So too can your identity develop and grow, but your personality has more plasticity and tends to change, and that is okay. It may take you years to build up a personality that enables you to “fit in,” “survive” and please those around you while keeping your identity safely tucked away for another day.

By distinguishing between your personality and your identity, you can work towards cultivating self-awareness, confidence, authentic expression and alignment, intelligence and self-love. By embracing and connecting with your unique identity you can begin to live a more fulfilling and powerful life, rather than playing a role for others.

Personality vs. Identity:
Personality = the outward expression of you
Identity = the inner authentic self

Self-development isn’t about creating a new identity or being something you’re not, but about stripping away layers to reveal and discover the authentic you hidden beneath your personality.
